27 Months

Rowen is changing so rapidly. He is really becoming such a little boy. We are just madly in love with him and of course think he is so smart! We know he is smart but we also know that he is very typical for a two year old, and we love that!

Saying the funniest and sweetest things...
  • Says, "Love you too" when we say "I love you", and sometimes before we can say "I love you" when we put him to bed at night he has already said, "love you too". He will walk up to me at random times during the day and hug my leg and say, "Love you too mommy". This of course melts my heart.
  • If I am laughing or smiling at him, Ro will say, "Mommy is happy!" and grin at me with those brown sparkly eyes.
  • "I want to go there!"- Ro says this a lot. If we start to talk about someone or something, he immediately wants to go see that person or see that place. For example, sometimes we mention that we will be going to see Mickey and Minnie's house (in November for TJ and Erin's wedding). Rowen will say, "I want to go there!" over and over. So, we don't talk about it very often :).
  • "Mommy is my friend!" or "Daddy is my friend!" or "Grammy/Papa/Grandpa/Nana is my friend!"
  • When we ask, "What is your name?", Ro will sometimes reply with, "ROWEN VOLK!"
  • Sings "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" in the most darling voice. He adds in "pickle in the sky!" to be funny! He laughs and laughs at the funny he made and of course so do we :).
  • Also loves to sing BINGO, Happy Birthday, and Old McDonald all by himself.
  • Rowen will summarize his day for us when we ask "Did you have a fun day?". It is so sweet. He will say something like, "I played with Grandpa, we played cars. And I had lunch with Nana, some french fries. And I go outside and run. And I read some books. And I...." on and on and on!

Swinging and reading books... one of Ro's favorite pass times :)

Letters: Sometimes he will spell his name for me when I ask, he yells "R, O, W, E, N!". Rowen notices letters everywhere- the grocery store, in books, on boxes, on signs and billboards, you name it. We have taught him that certain letters go with the names of special people in his life so he will usually say, "Grammy's letter" when he sees a G, or "Cooper's letter" for C instead of saying the letter name but if I ask him to tell me the letter name he usually will- if he is in the right mood :). He seems to be interested in certain letters for a few days/weeks then seems to forget a few. His favorite letters right now are G, P, N, C, R, O, W, E, T, M, D, and B. All of these letters are meaningful to him because they are the beginning letter of someone's name and/or they are in his name.

Vocabulary:
I don't know what Rowen doesn't say now. If he doesn't know a word for something he always asks, "What's that" or "What's this". Once we tell him he doesn't forget. We are still amazed daily by the vocabulary he uses and how he is using past tense and just overall correct grammatical usage. We don't realize how much little ones really do listen to us talk and how much they learn from just that!

Rowen is definitely using complete sentences now. As his Nana said, "He is talking in paragraphs now!", and it is true. Sometimes he will just talk and talk and talk and talk about things that make perfect sense. We can follow his thought process and are seeing him make connections between all sorts of things, places, people, experiences, etc.

Having a great time swimming with daddy.

Counting: We love to hear Rowen count! It is so darling... "one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve (sometimes he says two instead), teen, teen, teen, teen, teen (for who knows how long), twenty!". Rowen loves to count the school buses on the way to drop mommy off at work each day and he counts the houses in our neighborhood on the way home. When we get to the end of a block he will say, "Oooooh" and put his hands over his eyes, then start over again at one. I guess he thinks he can't keep counting on the next block. This just makes me smile- I don't want him to stop doing this so I haven't really worked on getting him to continue counting on the next block.

Shapes: Rowen loves to point out shapes to us. He is pretty good with circle, triangle, square, star, heart, and oval. The other day we were playing a game with shapes and he said, "Rowen likes circles!". I just had to laugh :).

Behavior: All I can say is... CHALLENGING and as sweet a pie all wrapped up in one darling boy. Rowen has his goods days and his not so good days but mostly he has the hardest time when he is tired- around nap time and dinner time. Also, when we have to change something quickly- like if we are running late and I have to rush us both a bit he gets overwhelmed and often ends up throwing a fit :). We are just rolling with the punches and doing our best to be consistent, give him choices so he has some power, and not let him control every situation in our house. So much easier said than done!

Other News:
Rowen started attending Cheney Cooperative Preschool on Monday and Wednesday mornings from 10-12. He loves the interaction with other kids and mommy loves that she or Nana or Papa are with him to help him learn and make new friends.

First day of preschool. Rowen is saying, "cheese!".

"Grandpa made this!"

This is what Rowen says every time he climbs up onto his new play set in the backyard. Grandpa found this play set used, took it apart, worked his magic, and made it look like brand new again! Grandpa is truly a hero in Rowen's eyes, as I'm sure he will be for many years to come :). Rowen is so thrilled with it, that we usually play on it twice a day for at least 30 minutes each time, once in the morning and once right after his nap. Ro is getting really good at climbing up the rock climbing wall, the ladder, and the rope ladder. He of course wants to do everything himself so all we hear is, "Roro do himself!"

Unfortanetley, I don't have the greatest photos yet of Ro playing on it but here are a few of the day Grandpa and Daddy set it all up.

Thanks Grandpa (and Nana!)! Rowen loves his new play set.

Chatter Bug

As I remember the more interesting or funny things that Rowen has been saying for awhile now or are new I will add them to this post, mostly just for me to look back at later. I wish I would have started this "list" earlier because there is so much to document :)

March 19

"What's that?" or "What's this?"- I guess this is the beginning of the toddler questions. Ro asks me this at least 10 times a day. I am constantly telling him the name of something and then he usually remembers it. Today we were swinging together and he pointed to the chain and asked, "What's this?". I told him and for the rest of the time we were outside playing he kept pointing to the chain saying, "Chain mama!"

Rowen has started to blurt out random facts at the least expected times and places. Today in the car he said, "Mama, frogs eat bugs."- clear as a bell
me: "Yes, they do. Where do they live?"
Ro: "nests"-- I guess we will have to start working on animal habitats :)

March 12

"too hard mommy"- when he is having a hard time doing something himself OR he doesn't want to do it himself :)

"play friends!"- when he wants to go play with someone (mostly Cooper!)

"Love you mommy/daddy"

"glad to meet ya"- we are pretty sure he learned this from Grandpa :)

"you want to race?"- when he wants us to chase him or when playing with his toy cars

"Go get cars downstairs/upstairs, ______ (mommy, daddy, grammy)"

"Roro want to play"

March 6
"I like it! I like it!"- when being spun in circles by Daddy, when eating something yummy, when playing something fun, etc.

"I did it! I did it!"-when he has accomplished something new or challenging.

"No work mommy!"- when he thinks I am leaving him to go to work.

If I say something doesn't work or is broken he immediately says, "Daddy fix it!"

"Lady Gaga"- This one requires a little explaining. He saw her on a morning TV show while she was being interviewed and ever since he says that name in the most random places and times. For example, in the grocery store in the pasta isle he burst out, "Mama, Lady Gaga!" and when singing Happy Birthday for the hundredth time on the way home from work one day he said, "sing happy birthday to friend", I replied with, "what friend?", this is when Rowen replied with, "Lady Gaga". My mom and I couldn't help but to burst out laughing. Rowen was appalled by this and looked at us both in disgust. We DID NOT sing happy birthday to Laday Gaga. I convinced him to sing to Gigi instead :).

"no listen"- He says this to us when we can't understand what he is saying. This usually only happens when he is saying something new that we haven't' heard him say much yet and therefore can't decipher the pronunciation. Rowen becomes quite frustrated with us easily in these types of situations :).

On the way to Nana and Grandpa's in the morning my mom tells him to let Nana and Grandpa know that he is on his way. This is his cue to start yelling, "Nana, Grandpa, here I come!". Grammy says he will yell it from Betz to there house some days. My mom says that he also yells out, "Nana, toast ready!", when he is hungry.

And there are many more... I will keep adding to this as I remember :).

A few of our favorite nursery rhymes

Happy Birthday Clara!

This morning we celebrated Clara's 2nd birthday! She doesn't officially turn 2 until next week so we feel very fortunate to be the first to give her a birthday bash! We celebrated with a delicious breakfast at Bennett's house with coffee cake as Clara's birthday cake! After breakfast (and before) the 3 boys and Clara played, played, played. It was so fun to watch them all play together and to get a chance to give sweet Clara some big hugs and kisses. We miss you already Clara! Happy 2nd Birthday sweet girl :).

Copy and paste and you will be taken to the video.

Devri, Josie and I were delighted to get a chance to buy a little girl birthday gift. Clara's mommy said that she wants to wear dresses now so we jumped at the chance to pick out a darling dress, sweater, and tights. Clara was thrilled with the gift and asked to put it all on right away (over the outfit she was already wearing).

Sing along

Rowen loves to sing along with us or to music. He has a few favorites... The Wheels On The Bus, If You're Happy and You Know It, There were 10 In The Bed, and The Wheels On The Race Car. Here is our little man singing along... you can tell that he takes it pretty seriously and really concentrates to give his best performance!
