Paxton is 1 year old!

Our sweet little Pax is 1.

I know it sounds cliche but really I can't believe my littlest baby is already 1. This year has flown by. The saying, "The days are long but the years are short" (or something like that) is so very true when you are a mama! Some of the days over this past year did seem very long- being home all day, every day with my boys is incredible and challenging. I love being a full time stay at home mom. The rewards are endless. The work is also endless and can sometimes feel overwhelming. I really wouldn't change it for anything but it certainly has not always been easy for me. I will never forget this amazing year with my two boys, watching Rowen become a generous big brother and watching our littlest child grow and change and grow and change over and over again. What an awesome time in all of our lives! The years really are flying by- no longer do we have an infant, he is 1! How did this happen?

 Paxton's Birthday Breakfast-
2 whole and large oatmeal banana pancakes, yo baby vanilla yogurt and milk. Pax continues to have a large appetite :).

He LOVED the pancakes!

Our family at Paxton's birthday party in the park. :)

Opening presents was funny. Paxton was of course clueless as to how it all worked but big brother was a huge help.
Paxton received many thoughtful gifts but of course he really only cared about the ball that Rowen picked out for him. Paxton loves to throw balls and Rowen knew he would love this red one!

We sang "Happy Birthday" to Pax and he seemed a little stunned. Big brother blew out the candle and then we let Pax dig into his cupcake.
Paxton had little bites of cake before he turned 1 but nothing like an entire cupcake all to himself. He devoured it! I think he is as much a fan of chocolate as his big brother is.

I am pretty sure he is asking for "more" here :).

Yum! Ice cream too! So cold and squishy!

The overall "theme" of the party was lions, hence Paxton's outfit :). Rowen loves lions, he pretends to be a lion most days so Paxton has lots of experience with lions roars and playing lion in general. So, when I took Rowen to the store to pick out Paxton's birthday plates, napkins, etc Rowen naturally chose the lion themed package right away. Rowen held it up to me and Paxton, Paxton pointed to the lion on the plate and "roared"! It worked out perfectly because it was actually a first birthday package! It was meant to be :). In addition to picking out the birthday decorations, Rowen made this darling sign (with my help of course) for the party. He worked so hard on it. Rowen is always ready to celebrate others. We are so happy to see that he was just as into his little brother's birthday as he is his own or any other family members'. Such a sweet big brother!

The kids played in the park and Rowen had a big moment- he learned how to pump on the swing! This is something he has been working on for over a year now and finally it just all clicked. All of a sudden he was flying away on that swing. Such a memorable milestone on Pax's birthday :).

By the end of the evening Pax was tuckered out!
He was a delightful Birthday Boy- loving every part of his big day.

At 1 year old Paxton weighs 22.6 lbs- 55% and measured 30.5 inches-82%
  • Waves "hi" and "bye".
  • Does Patty Cake- claps and rolls his hands
  • Standing on his own for a few seconds before plopping down on his tush
  • Cruising along furniture more and more
  • Climbs up onto Rowen's bed! I didn't know he could do this until all of sudden he was sitting on the bed, bouncing away with a huge grin on his face!
  • Favorite word is "dat!". Also says mama, dada and we think we have heard "this" a few times. He also jibbers jabbers in a rhythmic way, mimicking how I sing to him or chant little poems to him.
  • Loves it when I chant "P-A-X-T-O-N PAXTON!" when I change his diaper. Then when we are all done he gets to stand up on his changing pad and touch the letters P-A-X-T-O-N that are on the wall above his changing table.
  • Favorite songs are the ABC's, One Little, Two Little, etc, Mama Loves Her Paxton
  • Loves Chicka Chicka Boom Boom- I chant the first few pages to him and bounce him up and down to the "boom boom"- lots of giggles and smiles!
  • Hums- this is very sweet
  • Loves to play, play, play or more like explore- will play alone for extended periods of time
  • We often hear Pax laughing while he plays- he cracks himself up often! This is one of our favorite things about Pax, he just seems to be happy go lucky.
  • He MUST climb (crawl) the stairs on his own EVERY time we go upstairs. If he doesn't want to crawl up himself then I know he is very tired or not feeling well.
  • Claps for himself and others spontaneously.
  • Starts laughing so that we will start laughing. He does this in the car and when sitting in his high chair. He is such a little clown :).
  • Loves music, dances to music, plays Rowen's musical instruments.
  • Stands in front of the washing machine and dryer to watch the clothes go round and round. He just recently discovered the oven and that it also has a window. He stood in front of the window of the oven and looked at his reflection (we think) for quite some time.
  • 2 teeth on bottom- the middle two and 4 teeth on top- 2 are all the way through but the other 2 have just popped through. The 4 teeth on top are so cute because the 2 that are all the way through that you can see well are one middle tooth and one tooth on the side.
  • Drinks whole milk first thing in the morning out of a sippy cup and maybe a few other times throughout the day. Then Pax has a bottle right before bed time. He has transitioned from stopping breast feeding to whole milk only really well!
  • Gives us big open mouth wet kisses.
  • Sleeps really well- from about 7:30 p.m. to about 6:45-7:30 a.m. (this seems to fluctuate), naps from about 9 a.m. until about 10-10:30 then naps again around 1:30 until about 3-3:30. It seems like he is just starting to become really predictable with this schedule. It took longer to get Pax on a schedule than it did Rowen and I think that is because we are almost always going, going, going- keeping Rowen busy is priority! So, the schedule has to be more flexible.
  • Is happiest when he is dirty. Yes, he is truly all boy. I really didn't know how dirty a little boy could get until Paxton came along. This kid has a talent for getting dirty. He loves to play in the rocks, dirt, and sand box in our back yard. He will cover his legs and feet with dirt or sand and just smiles the entire time. He throws rocks and digs his hands into the dirt. He is over trying to eat the dirt and sand so that is good. I have to scrub his hands, feet, and legs with a wash cloth after he has been outside and over the past month he pretty much has to have a bath every night because he is so dirty.
  • Loves to be outside. Pax with stand at the slider door and whine and point at the backyard.
  • Paxton wants to do EVERYTHING big brother does. This is darling and difficult.
  • Pax has been trying to climb up the play set in our back yard. He is pretty determined. I wouldn't be surprised if by next summer he is climbing up it with ease. This amazes me because Rowen was never a "climber". He wanted help doing most things like that but Pax just goes for it all with no fear.
  • Screams and points to get what he wants. Ugh!
  • Has discovered that laying on pillows is really fun.
  •  Wants snuggles after he wakes up from a nap and first thing in the morning. Lays his head on our shoulder and tucks his arms in under his chest. This melts our hearts.
  • Holds his arms out with his hands facing up and whines to let us know he wants picked up.

Pax,
You are a ray of sunshine in our family. We all adore you. This past year has been so full of joy and love because of you. Thank you sweet boy.
Love, Mama

Paxton's 11th Month

  • Weighs 21.4 lbs (45%)
  • lots of blond hair- mostly on the back of his head :)
  • BLUE eyes

    • Pulling up on everything
    • Cruising some
    • bending down to pick something up (while holding onto something with the other hand of course) and then standing up again
    • Saying "dat!" while he points at stuff- we think he is saying "that" as in "what's that?", something we say to him often
    • Has to be a part of everything daddy and Rowen are doing; his feelings are hurt easily if he is not included :(
    • Super crazy about daddy in general; wants daddy to carry him around and cries when he leaves the room
    • Stopped  nursing at about 11 1/2 months
    • teething like crazy! 2 teeth on bottom and one through on the top but 3 more coming in on the top right now!
    • very active, explores the house and toys and every nook and cranny all day long!
    • sleeping great- usually from about 7:30 to about 7 a.m. (with a few early wakes up each week which throw me off completely!)
    • wearing 12 month and 12-18 month clothing
    • says "uh oh" in his own way- kind of like a hum
    • still growls often, points at most animals and growls, has growling contests with big brother
    • is trying to make animal sounds- most animals make the same sound- "hmm hmm" but a cow gets one long "hmmmmmm"
    • went camping twice and did pretty well sleeping in the pop up camper
    • loves the water- very comfortable with it
    • bear crawls when on grass or concrete to keep his knees from touching the ground
    • gives open mouth, wet, slobbery kisses
    • dances to music every day

    Paxton,
You blow me away each and every day with your precious smiles and playfulness. I love and adore everything about you!

    Paxton's 10th Month

This past month has been crazy around here! Our littlest boy is VERY mobile! I can't believe the difference it has made in our daily lives. Gone is the laid back baby who sat on my lap, watching big brother play. Gone is the baby who pretty much only smiled and giggled at everything and everyone. Gone is the baby who left all of the big brother's toys alone :). These wonderful things may not be as much a part of our days any longer but the active, delightful, curious little guy who is quickly emerging is just as much fun and lovable!

    • crawling
    • discovered the stairs (the gates went up quickly!)
    • pulling up to his knees and occasionally to his feet
    • waving bye bye
    • clapping
    • dancing to music
    • throws a little temper tantrum when things don't go his way (big uh oh!!!)- kicks legs and screams
    • does the "bear crawl" (hands and feet) occasionally
    • tries to "woof" like a dog
    • throws food off of his highchair tray then looks at us and shakes his head back and forth
    • when we say "no no Pax" in a soft voice he looks at us and either growls at us, shakes his head back and forth, or makes a whiny sound
    • adores animals, especially dogs and of course our Coco
    • loves animal sounds and tries to do them himself- they usually come out as a grunt or a sniff
    • LOVES to eat everything- don't even try to eat anything in front of him without an option for Pax too!
    • laughs and smiles all day long still
    • teething so the laughing and smiling is broken up with some whining but nothing major
    • one tooth on top and one tooth on the bottom coming through with a few more on top and bottom showing up
    • nursing only about twice a day- I think we are VERY close to being done :(
    • takes a bottle before bed
    • has been traveling a bit- has done really well with it for the most part
    • drinking water only out of a sippy cup because he still lets much of it run down his chin and onto everything else :)
    • favorite playmate is still big brother, big brother gets the biggest smiles still
    • loves to play "chase" and ball with big brother
    • I have let Pax eat lots of foods that I never let Rowen eat at this point- ice cream, frozen yogurt, whole milk (his doctor actually recommended we do this one), butter (also doctors recommendation), jelly, little bites of treats we are eating like cake, icing, pie, etc. I hope I don't mess his metabolism up for life!
    • still saying mama and dada the most and lots of jibber jabber

    Paxton,
I can't believe you are almost 1 year old! How did this happen my littlest boy?! You fill our days with so much joy. We can't get enough of watching you explore your world with such intense interest while crawling all over our house and any where else we will put you down. Your lovable personality is such a gift to us.
    Love, Mama

My son thinks I am an Olympian

Watching the Olympics is a big deal in our house. I love it and Rowen is really starting to enjoy it too. He asks to watch the Olympics and is asking TONS of questions about all of the events and athletes. Yesterday he watched a few minutes of water polo with Grammy and then they "played" water polo with pillows on her bed. He won a gold medal for his stellar goalie skills. Rowen loved every minute of course.

However, the most memorable Olympic 2012 Rowen moment thus far was just a few days ago when Rowen asked me in all seriousness, "Mommy, when were you in the Olympics? You know, for running?". I should have went along with it and told some elaborate story about overcoming the most difficult run of my life and winning a gold medal, but instead I couldn't help but smile, give my sweet boy a big hug and break the news to him that his mama has never been an Olympian. That news didn't seem to disappoint him, so all is well.

Once again, I am reminded that no matter how much it seems Ro is growing up and figuring out so much, he is still just 4 with a 4 year old view of the world. One where his mommy could be an Olympic athlete :).

    Rowen at 4 1/2 (and a million photos :))

My big 4 1/2 year old boy

Daddy's 33rd birthday- Rowen picked out 3 signs for Daddy's garage.

They both looked terrified in this photo but I assure you they both LOVE this game.

learning to ride his bike- first attempt was a struggle so we took a break for a day

picking strawberries at Greenbluff with mommy, Pax and Grammy

     enjoying his hard work

second attempt at riding without training wheels was a super success!

silly boy fresh out of the bath tub- this photo gives blows me away,
I see a future teenage boy for some reason

ice cream bars on a hot summer night (in only underwear of course!)

the best big brother with his adoring little brother

the love between these two is so fun to watch

a proud mama with her two boys

    cute brothers
strawberry lemonade on a hot summer day

Rowen wearing his eye patch- he chose the patch with the bike on it because he had just learned to ride without training wheels.

Rowen and Cooper- buddies being silly

    playing together

Mama and her boys at the library

both boys relaxing in Paxton's car seat :)

     Bennett and Rowen at T-Ball

my chocoholic- I couldn't adore him more :)

    At 4 1/2 Rowen is...
    • spelling some words- Rowen, Volk, love, mom, dad, Pax, Roro, Papa, Nana, mommy, daddy, Grammy, (Grandpa is a bit harder), Cooper,
    • very interested in signs and what they all say and mean- we discuss signs all the way to somewhere while in the car and all the way home sometimes. I have never had to think about signs in so much detail in my life! :)
    • still loves snuggles from mommy the most- I hope I get these for many more years to come
    • riding his bike WITHOUT training wheels! Ro is working on starting and stopping with ease still but he can really fly!
    • playing T-Ball this summer and enjoying a tumbling class through the YMCA
    • very protective of little brother
    • loves to do "chores"- Rowen shines the most when he can be independent so we have a system that encourages and rewards Rowen for doing so...he makes his bed in the morning (not exactly like I would but that isn't what matters right?!), gets himself dressed (I lay out his outfit for the next day each night- sometimes I forget), brings his water cup downstairs each morning, often puts a waffle in the toaster by himself, and pours himself a glass of milk (only if I know the container isn't very full), gets himself a glass of ice water from the fridge; at night he brushes his own teeth and uses mouth wash on his own, puts his dirty clothes in the correct basket in the laundry room each night before bed, and reminds mom and dad to put his eye drop in
    • tells me he loves me multiple times before he leaves with anyone else and always blows me a kiss, this is precious and I love it so very much
    • wears an eye patch for 2 hours a day (broken up into 4, 30 minute sessions) to continue to work on strengthening the eye that has the dermoid on it (we continue to dilate his left eye every day with eye drops and his eye doctor is very pleased with his eye sight and progress at this point)
    • loves to watch TV, play on the ipad, take photos with mommy and daddy's iphones, listen to music and stories on our ipod, type on the computer
    • continues to enjoy to write anything and everything- lists, cards, notes, stories
    • loves to run through the sprinkler and play in his sand box outside
    • goes on a bike ride at least a few days a week with mommy, brother, Grammy and sometimes in the evenings with daddy
    • his favorite "rock song" is Save Me San Francisco by Train
    • gives mommy a run for her money every. single. day.
    • wears every emotion he feels right on his sleeve, doesn't hide a thing- this is challenging of course
    • favorite thing to play with is still his cars and stuffed animals
    • enjoys creating things- Rowen has made an elevator, a lions den, a rocket, a rabbit trap, lots of forts with blankets, and his own "bee traps", just to name a few :)
    • helps mama take care of Paxton- watches him in the play room if mama has to leave for a minute, brings Paxton's toys to play with, helps Paxton up if he falls down, shows Paxton how to do many things, feeds Paxton
    • continues to be very imaginative
    • continues to remember everything- amazes us with the things he can recall that seem like small events to us but obviously must be making a huge impact on him
    • has many, many questions about EVERYTHING!
    Rowen,
You are such a special little boy. You are so bright, loving, thoughtful, and energetic. I look at your sweet face and still see the baby boy who made me a mama. Then in the next moment I see a little boy who is growing up too fast. You bring so much joy to our lives. I will always try my best to be the best mommy for you. All I ask of you is to continue to only be yourself because you are amazing just as you are.
    Love, Mama

    • becoming much more feisty; let's us know loud and clear now what he likes and doesn't like
    • we can't imagine life without him
Recently Rowen, Eric and I were on a walk alone in Manito Park... Rowen said, "This feels strange."
Me: Why? (even though I was feeling it too!)
    R: Paxton isn't here! I miss him.
Eric and I looked at each other over Ro's head with complete agreement and understanding.

    Pax,
You continue to amaze us with your happy disposition and precious gummy smiles! Mama could cuddle you all day long if I could. You truly make our family so happy. We love you sweet baby boy.
    Love, Mama
